Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Ray Schafer is going to be a Duck.
Wasilla's big man has given the University of Oregon an oral commitment to join their men's basketball team for the 2003-04 season. Schafer is expected to sign a National Letter of Intent on November 13, the first day of the early signing period.
"It feels great. It is a big relief," Schafer said of his choice. "Going into my senior year I did not want the pressure of still having to choose a school. I did not want that to be a distraction for me or my teammates."
Schafer visited four schools before deciding on Oregon. the 7-footer make stops at San Diego State, Gonzaga and Arizona State in addition to Oregon.
"Going to all of the schools really would have been great," Schafer said. "I liked Oregon's program. The coach said that he is willing to give up talent for character and I like that. It showed in the players."
"It could not happen to a nicer guy," Wasilla head coach Jason Marvel said. "He's is the nicest kid you will meet and does well in his academics."
The Warrior post player averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds per game during his junior campaign, garnering both all-region and all-state honors. Shafer helped lead his team to a Region III championship and the consolation final of the state tournament last season.
Schafer was named honorable mention all-state as a sophomore.
Schafer has been one of the most sought after student-athletes in Alaska this past year.
More than 100 Division I schools contacted Shafer during his junior season.
Oregon went 23-8 overall and won the Pac 10 title with a 14-4 mark. The Ducks advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Oregon has been picked as high as sixth in the 2002-03 preseason polls.
"I really like their spirit and team unity," Shafer said. "There are some things that you just want to be a part of."
