Citing the desire to avoid setting a dangerous precedent, the Mat-Su School Board unanimously voted Wednesday against paying half of the estimated $85,000 that it would cost to hold a proposed special spring election for a nearly $40-million school bond.
Board members argued that the responsibility of determining whether to finance elections is the responsibility of the borough assembly, not the school board.
“I think we walk down a pretty slippery hill when we start involving ourselves in what is clearly an assembly's responsibility, which is to do elections,” said school board member Rob Wells.
“I'll do all I can to support the passing of this bond, but I don't think funding it is our role.”
