Families with children in the Mat-Su Borough School District were thrown a curve ball Sunday evening. School bus service for regular education students in the Palmer area is canceled Monday, according to school district officials.
“The MSBSD Transportation Department was alerted today by our busing contractor, First Student, that there is a shortage of bus drivers due to COVID for tomorrow and possibly throughout this next week. School will remain open, but administration is cancelling regular education bus service for Palmer schools tomorrow, Monday, August 23. Special education bus service will continue in Palmer schools tomorrow and is not impacted by this cancelation,” district officials said in an email sent to families just before 6 p.m. Sunday night.
The cancelation impacts students at Palmer High, Palmer Junior Middle, Sherrod Elementary, Swanson Elementary, Butte Elementary, Sutton Elementary and Academy Charter. Shuttles from Palmer to Valley Pathways and Mat-Su Career and Technical have also been canceled.
“Administration will look at cancelations in other areas throughout the week. More information will be provided by the end of tomorrow. Please note, all remaining routes may experience delays as substitute drivers will be driving new routes,” district officials said.
