The school librarian at Wasilla High School recently earned a high honor from her peers.
Shelly Logsdon was awarded the Alaska Association of School Librarian's Linda K. Barrett Service Award for 2004. On March 26, Logsdon was recognized by he organization for her dedication and commitment to developing school libraries.
Logsdon has worked as a librarian in both elementary and secondary school settings. Her dedication to the Battle of the Books program made her stand out in the selection process.
According to one nomination, "Shelly has made time in her work schedule and devoted countless after school, weekend, and summer hours to this program, and it has flourished under her care. She has an enviable ability to guide without being overbearing and to promote changes without stepping on toes.
"Any who have worked directly with her would agree that she is quick to respond to questions, thorough in her answers, and steadfast in her support of school librarians and the work we do to promote reading and the Battle of the Books program in our schools and in Alaska. Shelly's expertise and service has benefited every school library program and student in the state of Alaska."
This year, Battle of the Books is celebrating its 20th anniversary in Alaska. Logsdon is the state level chairperson of the program.
Logsdon has developed the Battle of the Books Web site during the last two years, allowing for increased communication for program participants. She has developed the site to the point where participants can virtually meet fellow competitors prior to the state competition.
