School rinks dry, empty

Here are a few words for the Mat-Su School District Board of Education and Jim Colver in particular.

I see where Colver proposed putting a hockey rink at Su Valley High School. How much does a hockey rink cost? I wish you would do just a little homework before including this in the school’s plans.

Are you aware there are many, many rinks at schools in the Valley that have never had ice on them, and many more that haven’t in 15 years or more?

How many hockey rinks have been turned down at Borough schools in the past 15 years? I know of at least six, and I believe there are many more. You could easily check my numbers with Borough maintenance employees.

What you are proposing is a colossal waste of our tax dollars.

I maintained outdoor ice for MAHA (Mat-Su Amateur Hockey Assocation) for many years and had hundreds of promises to help, but I can’t remember more than two who ever did.
