The Wasilla Teen Leadership program will hold a campout on Oct. 6 to raise awareness for homeless teens. The group will be accepting donations from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and is asking for new winter coats, hats and gloves. Cash donations will also be accepted.
The Colony Middle School craft bazaar will be held Oct. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the school. Vendors looking to sell items can contact Toby Lambert at 761-1517 or email tobias.lambert@matsuk12.us. Table space is $40.
Wasilla Middle School will host a free concert by the Arctic Chamber Orchestra on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. No tickets are required. The touring orchestra was founded in 1970 and has played in more than 130 different cities and villages in Alaska, the Yukon, Switzerland, Scandanavia, China and Spain. This year’s tour will feature soloist Teresa Eickel, who will perform six opera arias. Performances will include selections from Johan Strauss, Offenbach, Mozart, Bizet, Puccini, Mascagni, Catalani and Tchaikovsky.
Colony Middle Schools drama department will stage “The Sound of Music” starting Oct. 30. Showtimes are Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 31 at 2 and 7 p.m., Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 7 at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 each or $13 for dinner and show tickets fro the Nov. 6 and 7 evening performances. Governor Bill Walker is calling for nominations for the annual Governor’s North Star Awards for International Excellence. Since 1986, these awards have recognized Alaskan companies and organizations engaged in successful international business and activities.
Alaskan businesses, schools, and other organizations active in international arenas may nominate others or themselves in one or more categories: export of goods, export of services, foreign investment, education, the travel industry, transportation, cultural exchange, humanitarian exchange or scientific exchange.

The Alaska Humanities Forum offers a cross-cultural exchange program for middle and high schools across the state. The Sister School Exchange is a free program both for the schools involved and the participants traveling in the exchange. SSE is looking for schools and teachers interested in applying for the 2015-2016 school year. High school students may a 3-5 minute audio essay to the Voice of Democracy program, which is awarding $30,000 in scholarships.
Each year, nearly 38,000 high school students from across the country enter to win a share of the $2.2 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the VFW’s Voice of Democracy audio-essay competition.
The VFW established the Voice of Democracy program in 1947 to provide students in grades 9 through 12 the opportunity to express themselves in regards to democratic ideas and principles. For more information, visit bit.ly/1IhHucP.
