Schools missed opportunity

To the editor:

Last week, the day of the president’s speech to the nation, I called the office of the school superintendent for the Mat Valley. My suggestion was that the super contact the schools and suggest that the students listen to the president’s speech.

We all remember the crackle of the intercom. I don’t think that has changed. I even said that maybe it was not proper to suggest they listen. But I said if I was in charge I’d take the heat and tell them it’s an important part of education in Alaska’s system.

The money being spent now is their money and their debt. It should be part of the curriculum. I think politics is important now more than ever.

The school district said “no” to my suggestion. Someone said it is the parents’ responsibility to provide political learning. I find that hard to believe.

Science and math is the answer to all things. I believe that. Science and math and all the smart people got us to the moon and back and other wonderful things come from that. God bless them.

But a political decision cancelled that project.

You figure it.
