Mat-Su Borough School District applauds the Schools page student reporters as this week’s Students of the Week. The district also thanks their teachers, especially Emily Fortsner, who coordinates the Schools Page.
This year students participated from American Charter, Burchell High, Colony High, Houston High, Mat-Su Career and Technical High School, Palmer High School and Wasilla High.
It has been said that leading a team of student reporters is almost a full-time job. As well as supervising and editing their student opinion pieces and feature stories, teachers also have written Chalk Talk columns. Student photographers have captured fun and engaging photos of their schools’ assemblies, friendship ties and moments from their high school experiences.
Their stories have been across a broad spectrum of topics from changes at school this year to annoying bells, changes in scheduling and just overall articles on how to be a successful student. Seniors have also written reflective pieces on life after high school.
The district also thanks the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman for providing opportunities for Mat-Su students to gain first-hand reporting and photography experience. Thank you as well to Alaska Airlines for funding the MSBSD Student of the Week in the Frontiersman.
This year’s Schools page program concludes at 3:30 p.m., May 11 with a reception and awards ceremony for student reporters.
