Scouts going door to door for food

Local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are hitting the streets for a good cause next weekend.

Scouts are going door-to-door for canned goods and other nonperishable food items, which they are donating to the Wasilla and Palmer food banks.

"We'll be out there hitting the pavement and banging on doors all around the Valley," said Gordon Ward, a leader from Boy Scout Troop 395.

"Of course we won't get to everyone's house, but we're going to try," Ward added.

Local Girl Scouts were also organizing a canned food drive in April, Ward said, so the Scouts have combined their efforts into one big drive.

All canned goods and nonperishable food items will be accepted. All food donations will be donated to food banks in the Valley. Monetary donations to local food banks are also acceptable.

Other organizations are getting behind the effort to bolster local food banks as well. The Wasilla Sunrise Rotary held a canned food drive this morning at the group's regular meeting.
