The Navy suspended its active search for a sailor assigned to an aircraft carrier who officials believe went overboard earlier this week north of mainland Australia.

The sailor, assigned to the USS George Washington (CVN-73) was reported overboard on July 28, and the Navy immediately launched a search effort in the Timor Sea, near northern Australia where the ship was operating, according to a statement provided by the U.S. Department of Defense.

The USS George Washington and units assigned to Carrier Strike Group 5 initiated search and rescue procedures after receiving reports of a possible Sailor overboard.

Units from Carrier Strike Group 5 and the Australian Defence Force and Australian Border Force assisted and are supported the U.S. Navy with the search and rescue efforts for the sailor.

Per Navy policy, the identity of the sailor has not yet been released.
