To the editor:
I want to thank Mat-Su Borough Mayor Larry DeVilbiss for his endorsement of my candidacy for the Matanuska Electric Association Board of Directors. MEA is committed to building a natural gas power plant in Eklutna. This power plant will meet the near term electrical demand of the MEA customers. There are still issues that need to be settled to ensure a steady supply and a reasonable price for the fuel to operate the plant. This will be the initial challenge for the board in 2013 and 2014.
Beyond that, the board must begin looking at the long-term demand for electricity along the entire Railbelt. Projects such as the Susitna/Wantana Dam have very long lead times. Planning must begin soon in order to make sure the project will be available when needed.
My past experience will assist the board as it deliberates on these challenges.
I have more than 20 years working with utility issues, including purchasing and installing new equipment, setting rates with fluctuating fuel prices and utility maintenance.
As an Alaska Power Association board member, I worked with other utilities in considering the long-term needs of Southcentral Alaska and the state. I ask for your support in the upcoming MEA Election.
