To the editor:
I recently read a series of letters from Mr. Andrew Evans, who has stated he works for DeLena Johnson’s campaign. He has painted a dark picture of Palmer. His view is in contrast to the more recent letter from a local businesswoman who gives a bright and shining view of Palmer.
Mr. Evans portrayed the city council as spending money without regard. I asked around and I found the answers. The heavy equipment purchases he referred to are mostly replacement snow removal equipment to help expedite street cleaning in winter — an important factor when you own a business in downtown Palmer. This is done in partnership with local contractors.
The undesignated general fund balance is slightly lower than the three to four months typically kept on hand; however, most of these funds were expended on opportunities to create jobs and revenue in Palmer (the ice arena), support the tourism industry (restrooms) or fund our required local match on road construction projects (done by local contractors). Some of these fees will also be paid back to the general fund by these projects over the next few years.
I have been in business in downtown Palmer since 1978, when a Realtor (Edna DeVries) sold our family the Valley Hotel. I’m proud to call Palmer home. Please vote on Oct. 5. Vote for realistic optimism and love of Palmer. I’m supporting Kevin Brown.
