On behalf of Valley children, Kids Are People Inc. Vice President Marie Brown and Programs Director Naomi Childers presented the Dorothy Saxton Honorary "Canoe Club" award to Sen. Ted Stevens during the senators August visit to Mat-Su. The Senator sponsored support of the Saxton emergency shelter and Mat-Su transitional living youth programs.
The award and shelter were named after Palmer Magistrate Dorothy Saxton. In the early days of the Valley, Saxton took great interest in youthful offenders. She frequently gave errant youths the option of going to jail or joining the Navy, hence "Dorothy's Canoe Club." Some of the "official" Canoe Club members still reside in the Valley and reportedly owe their successes in part to the wise decisions of the magistrate and their experience in the U.S. Navy.
Stevens was the prime force in bringing a 2001 Federal HUD Special Projects grant to support the residential programs that serve runaway, homeless and transitioning children.
KAP recognizes the actions of the senator as providing second chances for success for troubled Mat-Su youth.
