Sentencing delayed for woman involved in Ewing’s son’s death

PALMER — Dana Sanders, charged in connection with the shooting death of a local politician’s son, won’t receive a sentence until mid-September.

In a hearing Monday, Superior Court Judge Greg Heath agreed to delay Sanders’ sentencing until Sept. 14, a date chosen since it is likely to fall after her co-defendant, Jerome Capps, stands trial.

Sanders and Capps allegedly conspired to convince Jeremy Ewing — son of Mark Ewing, a former Mat-Su Borough Assemblyman and Wasilla City Councilman who is currently running for state house — to break into another man’s home in Butte and steal from him.

That man, Thomas Chapman was asleep, but woke up during the Aug. 29, 2009, break-in. Ewing was shot in an ensuing struggle.

Capps and Sanders were charged with criminal negligent homicide. Capps was in prison at the time, where he remains. Sanders has since been released on bail. Chapman, was never charged, likely because he was found to be acting in self-defense.
