Key road construction work on the Seward Meridian Parkway expansion project has entered its second phase, with construction crews operations kicking work into high gear after breaking for the winter.

Phase II construction has been underway for several weeks at the intersection with the Palmer-Wasilla Highway to Bogard Road, which, when completed, will be widened to four lanes, link two sections via a new roadway and add needed infrastructure improvements to alleviate the higher traffic volumes as the thoroughfare has become more populated.

Work will also include adding new stoplight intersections, right-in, right-out entrances, a center median in some sections, and non-motorized mobility improvements by adding a paved multi-use path along the full length of the road, which will connect to the exiting path at the Palmer-Wasilla Highway.

Additional work on this project will include:

-Extending the road to Seldon Road

-Adding new traffic signals at East Country Field Circle, E. Meridian Park Loop / E. Birch View Drive, Bogard Road, Tambert Drive, and Seldon Road

-Adding turn lanes

-Constructing 8-foot-wide paved shoulders

-Constructing a bridge over Cottonwood Creek

-Adding additional parking at Cottonwood Creek

-Improving access for the schools along the project corridor

The entrance to the Alcantra Alaska Army National Guard Armory, which is used as a training facility and for emergency response, will also be moved from its current location on Bogard Road to a new section of the Seward Meridian Parkway.

Also of note is the work to the existing eight-foot culvert at Cottonwood Creek, which will be replaced with a bridge. The existing culvert at Cottonwood Creek is currently closed to all creek users, meaning that water traffic is unable to pass through the culvert under the Seward Meridian Parkway.

Boaters will be unable to portage their boats across the road due to the active construction, so please plan accordingly. This closure is expected to last until fall 2025 while crews work to construct the new bridge over Cottonwood Creek.

Crews will also be building a paved parking lot and a gravel path under the bridge along the creek.

Drivers should expect some delays as flaggers stop traffic for construction vehicles. Access to Wasilla Lake via Cottonwood Creek from the road will be closed for the summer, along with the culvert connecting the seven-mile canoe route from Finger Lake.

Construction on this project started in 2024.Tofind more information with the latest traffic impacts at www.511.alaska.gov Exit Site icon.
