WASILLA — Sewing Together Sewing Studio owner Sara Scoles held an open house event to celebrate her first year as a growing small business owner in the Mat-Su Valley.
Sewing Together Sewing Studio offers a wide variety of sewing classes to youth and adults including homeschool students. They also offer special sessions for family friends such as the Mom and Me class.
“It’s been great,” Scoles said.
Scoles said that she’s dabbled with sewing since she got her first sewing machine around the age of 12. She said it became a full fledged passion about 10 years ago when her friend asked her to take on a quilting project. The entire process of creating and sharing her original work of art got her hooked in an all-new way.
“I just fell in love with it,” Scoles said.
Scoles said that learning to sew helps boost confidence and build a multitude of skills that are helpful outside the sewing circle.
“Your seam work can be your friend or your foe,” Scoles said. “Even if you mess up, you learn from your mistakes as well. You just persevere.”
Scoles also enjoys teaching and took on various temporary roles throughout her life. She said that she ultimately decided to combine her love for teaching with her love for sewing in an all-in-one hub for the community. She said that she wants to encourage anyone new to the hobby to try it out or give new ideas and inspiration to seasoned sewers.
“I love teaching. It’s a lot of fun,” Scoles said.
Scoles said it’s been a great first year and her line of customers had even stretched to Anchorage with people making the drive all the way to the Valley for her unique service. She said that she aims to expand her operation’s range of courses and add a location in Anchorage, but she’s going to need another employee besides herself to get there.
“There’s so many classes that I want to do and I’m only one person,” Scoles said with a laugh.
Scoles is a lifelong Alaskan. She said that she moved to the Valley from Eagle River about eight years ago and she’s taken root in her new hometown with her growing family and growing small business.
“It’s just a great community. It’s got a nice hometown feel,” Scoles said. “That’s really what motivates me to keep teaching the classes.”
