Shelter makes adopting pets convenient

I recently adopted two cats from the Mat-Su Borough animal control. One of the cats had been featured in the Frontiersmans “Pet Tails.” The “Pet Tails” feature of the newspaper is a great tool to help find homes for the animals at the shelter.

What I didn’t realize and maybe potential new pet owners don’t know is the adoption fees listed (usually $104.50) includes the cost of having the animal spayed or neutered and vaccinated, including the rabies shot if the animal is old enough. The shelter staff will transport your new pet to North Star Animal Hospital in Palmer and you pick up your new friend there, usually the next day.

The last time I adopted a pet from the shelter was 13 years ago and at that time you had the animal spayed or neutered after your brought your pet home, then you submitted proof to the Mat-Su Borough and then they reimbursed you half the cost. The new way is a lot easier.

I believe more people would adopt if they knew the adoption fee included having their new pet “fixed” and vaccinated. The animals at the shelter seem to sense their situation and are very appreciative, loving animals when they go to a home.
