Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Sidney George Shell Sr., 68, a lifelong resident of Alaska, died of cancer at his home in Wasilla on Feb. 17, 2005.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 5, at the Valley Funeral Home Chapel in Wasilla, with evangelist Jimmy Jordan officiating. Floral arrangements are welcome. Mr. Shell's ashes will be scattered over the Summit Lake area.
Mr. Shell was born in Seward on Oct. 29, 1936. He attended Hope School in Seward. In the 1960s, Mr. Shell served in the U.S. Army National Guard. During his lifetime, he lived in Anchorage, Eagle River and the Turnagain Arm area before making Wasilla his home.
He worked for Union Oil, Alaska Cleaners and American Linen, from which he retired in November 2002. He especially enjoyed fishing, horseback riding and mining.
His family wrote, "Sidney was not only a great father, but also a great friend. If you knew him, you knew he would do anything he could to help you. He was truly a great man and he will be missed tremendously."
His parents, Lewis and Emma Shell; a brother, Lewis Shell Jr. and sisters, Flora, Clara, Gladys, Vivian and Francis Shell, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his sons, Sidney Shell Jr. of Wasilla and Chad Scholz of Anchorage; daughter, Stacey Shell of New Orleans; daughter and son-in-law, Sadie and Luke Douglas of Wasilla; sisters, Dorothy, Hazel, Shirley and Emily and numerous other relatives and lifelong friends.
Donations may be made in the name of Sidney Shell Jr. or Sadie Douglas at 5701 Porcupine Ave., Wasilla, AK 99654. Arrangements were made by Valley Funeral Home & Crematory in Wasilla.
