To the editor:
Due to a very wet summer, the Matanuska River dike that runs the distance from Maud Road to Ye Old River Road has sustained severe damage. These dikes serve to not only prevent erosion on adjoining properties, but also containment of the river to allow it to stay its desired course.
The river will have the potential for flooding if dike repairs are not made in a timely fashion. This flooding will impact not only the surrounding properties but also those that lie upon Bodenburg Creek and those at equivalent elevations. This encompasses most homes in the eastern portion of the Butte community.
There are petitions, for support of dike repairs, circulating throughout the community at places such as the Butte Café’, the Butte liquor store and Encore Mechanical.
We encourage all residents to educate themselves and sign the petition to prevent devastation such as that which occurred in the 1971 flood of the Butte damaging 80 percent of the properties.
