A pedestrian walking path served as a temporary road Tuesday afternoon after a single-car wreck in which a Geo Tracker rolled nearly 70 yards near Mile 5.7 of Knik-Goose Bay Road closed part of the road.
The occupant, a 63-year old Manual Flores of Wasilla, was conscious and talking when firefighters pulled him from the mangled car. Flores was driving north when he lost control near Pinnacle Peak Dr, according to an Alaska State Trooper report. His 1994 Geo Tracker went into the right hand ditch and rolled multiple times, troopers said.
Flores was taken to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center and treated for injuries. He told police he was wearing a seatbelt during the wreck, the trooper report said.
As firefighters worked, troopers rerouted traffic onto a walking and biking path parallel to the road.
Katrina Greene, who was working at the Sure Shots Espresso hut near The Rib Shack, said she didn't see the accident occur, but looked up after hearing a loud noise to see a cloud of dust.
"The next car stopped and a person ran to the vehicle," Greene said.
As rescue crews left the scene, a trail of debris littered the ground. Amid broken glass and mangled plastic were CDs and other personal items from the car.
