PALMER - Grace Christian's Daniel Serventi and Soldotna's Bree Mucha took early leads in the Colony Pursuit at Colony High School on Friday.

Skiers raced through sub-zero temperatures Friday afternoon in the first of two days of racing at Colony High.

Serventi posted a time of 23 minutes and 31 seconds to win the boys' 7-kilometer classic, and finish ahead of Colony's Abe Meyerhofer, who was second at 24:28.

Andrew Liebing led Palmer, finishing 14th.

Mucha finished first in the girls' 5-K classic, clocking a time of 21:53. Hannah Smith was the top Valley skier, finishing 15th with a time of 26:08. Palmer's Meagan Lynn (17th), Colony's Brittney Anderson (18th) and Palmer's Celie Hull (20th) also finished in the top 20.

Alaska Schools Activities Association rules state racing cannot go as scheduled if temperatures dip under negative 4 degrees. Temperatures in the Palmer area were reported as low as -11 degrees Friday morning. Colony school officials monitored the temperatures throughout the day, and saw temps rise enough to race by Friday afternoon.

Racing continues Saturday at 10 a.m. For complete coverage, see the Sunday Frontiersman.
