Small schools wrestling tourney starts today in Nikiski

NIKISKI — Six Houston Hawks will compete in the ASAA/First National Bank 123A State Wrestling Championships, which starts today at Nikiski High School.

Luke Wagner, Drew Drake, Jake Davis, Cody Barber, Cesar Davila and Calen Wilbur are all slated to compete in the two-day championships. Wagner, who won a Denali/Kachemak Conference Championship last week, is the top-ranked wrestler at 220 pounds. Wrestling starts today at 10 a.m., and the championship semifinals are scheduled for 6 p.m. Action continues on Saturday, with consolation rounds starting at 9 a.m. and the championship finals slated for 5:15 p.m.

Valley teams to compete in duals championships

ANCHORAGE — Wasilla, Colony and Palmer are among 16 teams slated to compete in the 2011 Alaska State Duals Championships, which start today at 10 a.m. at South Anchorage High School.

The first round is split into four pools. Colony is in Pool A, along with South, West Valley and Dimond. Wasilla is in Pool B, with Chugiak, Soldotna and Bartlett. Palmer is in Pool C, with North Pole, Service and Kenai.

Valley wrestlers ranked

WASILLA — More than two dozen Mat-Su wrestlers are listed among the latest akmat.org prep wrestling rankings.

The defending state champion Wasilla Warriors have 12 grapplers on the list, including a pair — seniors Abe Fox and Tyler Adams — who are ranked first in their weight classes. Fox is first at 126 and Adams is No. 1 at 145.

Wasilla is also listed first in the team standings.

The Colony Knights have seven on the latest list, including top-ranked Simon Root at 170. There are five Palmer Moose on the rankings. Rankings are compiled and released by the Alaska wrestling website, akmat.org.
