Breathe Free Mat-Su would like to commend the Alaska State Fair for designating Friday, Sept. 4 as Smoke-Free Day at the Fair. Fairgoers that day will enjoy a healthy environment, free from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke.
Creating smoke-free environments is a cornerstone of a healthy community. Smoke-free policies help protect nonsmokers from secondhand smoke, provide a supportive environment for those who have successfully quit smoking or are trying to quit and send a powerful message to youth that smoking is not the norm.
Here’s hoping the wisdom that guided the designation of a single smoke-free day this year leads to an entire smoke-free Alaska State Fair in years to come.
