To the editor:
I attended the Palmer City Council meeting Tuesday and spoke in support of the ordinance to prohibit smoking in Palmer workplaces and public places.
Following my comments, freelance writer Zaz Hollander asked why I was willing to be the face of the smoke-free Palmer campaign. My reason is simple: My husband died of emphysema at age 51, in 1987. He never smoked a day in his life. He did, however, play music in the bars with his band, Larry Kincaid and the Drifters. He continued playing, even after he was diagnosed with emphysema.
Back then, we didn’t know just how deadly those smoky barrooms were. Today, we know better. We know that secondhand smoke kills. That’s why I strongly support the no-smoking ordinance, and I urge others to join me in that support.
