ROBERT DeBERRY/Frontiersman Palmer’s Grace Bohman rounds a corner during the girls; 5-kilometer cross country race at the Palmer Invitational Saturday afternoon. More than 1,100 runners competed in the event staged on the Michael Janecek Running Trails at Palmer High School.

PALMER — Earlier this season, Palmer head coach Tim Lundt predicted that Wylie Manglesdorf, Palmer’s top runner on the boys side, has the potential of posting a top-10 finish at the ASAA/First National Bank 4A State Championships this season.

On Saturday, Lundt’s seemed projection seemed very realistic.

Manglesdorf finished seventh in the 4A boys’ race of the Palmer Invitational, the largest meet of the season and a meet that is widely viewed as a preview of the state championships.

Manglesdorf — who has already seen a significant amount of success this season with a win in the preseason Colony Twilight Meet and top-15 finishes in the Homer and Skyview Invitationals — said it was certainly his goal to stay at the front of the Palmer Invite pack.

“I was going for a top-five, top-10 finish,” Manglesdorf said.

Manglesdorf said he ran in the top five for a portion of the race, but after suffering a bit of a cramp during the run, the Palmer junior fell back into seventh.

The 4A boys’ race didn’t include defending state champion and Michael Janecek Running Trails course record holder Trevor Dunbar, of Kodiak, who competed in a race in the Lower 48 over the weekend.

With Dunbar absent, South’s Aaron Fletcher was the first to cross the finish line, posting a time of 15:56, more than 16 seconds ahead of second-place Sam Salus of Kodiak.

Service, which placed four runners in the top-10, won the boys’ team title.

Colony finished fifth overall in the boys’ team standings, thanks in part to a pair of top-20 finishes.

Tanner Enloe finished 18th at 17:21, while teammate Steven Sinnett was 20th with a time of 17:33.

Jeff Ford (26th, 17:42), Dylan Crawford (32nd, 17:55), Andrew Reimer (53th, 18:09), Schyler Knopp (67th, 18:21) and Blake Wangberg (72nd 18:24) also finished among the top 75 runners.

Simon Fischer (17:40) led the Warriors to an 11h-place finish in the team standings with a 23rd-place finish.

Alden Lee (59th, 18:12), Cameron Sholar (79th, 18:30), Noah Ripley (83rd, 18:33), Jaron Christianson-Vavlis (85th, 18:43) and Michael Johnston (87th, 18:44) finished in the top-90 for WHS.

Ben Ballard (97th, 19:08), Kevin Montgomery (105th, 19:45), David VanHoomisen (112th, 20:07) and Forrest Stewart (132nd, 21:09) also finished for Palmer.

Dustin Dodds (106th, 19:48), Brogan Putnam (115th, 20:09), Joe Warner (130th, 20:51) and Jamison Richey (134th, 21:12) led Houston.

Colony also finished fifth in the girls’ standings, paced by a trio of Knights in the top-30.

Sydney Stewart, was the top Valley runner to cross the finish line in the race, and led the Knights with a 22nd-place finish and time of 20:34.

Alyssa Hutchins (25th, 20:37) and Abby Jahn (29th, 20:40) also finished in the top-30.

“I’m very pleased,” Colony co-head coach Mark Doner said after the race. “We had four girls at 21 (minutes) or below.”

Maria Wick also broke the 21-minute mark, finishing 37th at 20:55.

“What’s nice is the rotation up there,” Doner said. “Maria’s led for us, Abby’s led for us, Sydney’s led for us. It’s like a sled dog team, nobody likes one person one step ahead, so it makes the whole team go faster.”

Colony’s top-five runners finished less than 46 seconds apart in the standings.

Like Colony, Wasilla had a clump of runners with similar times. The top seven Warriors finished less than a minute apart and led WHS to an eighth-place finish in the team standings.

Sophomore Kendra Miner, a first-year runner, was the first Warrior to cross the finish line, placing 39th at 20:55. Miner edged temmate Katie Bialka, who was 40th at 22:41.

Brooke Nelson (47th, 21:14), Jessica Pahkala (50th, 21:20), Rachel Hoffman (53rd, 21:21), Erin Ripley (57th, 21:33) and Allison Kelley (64th, 21:51) finished in the top-65.

Gretchen Winter (87th, 22:38), Grace Bohman (106th, 23:49), Hannah Smith (109th, 24:09), Morgan Lundt (11tth, 24:16), Kiersten Dalms (118th, 25:40) and Hilary Denoncour (122nd, 26:16).

Su Valley scores pair of top-10 finishes

The Susitna Valley Rams scored a pair of top-10 finishes during 1-2-3A action of the Palmer Invitational.

Bailey Stevenson led the Su Valley girls with a seventh-place individual finish. Stevenson crossed the finish line at 20:56.

The Su Valley boys, led by Bill Kelley’s 42nd-place finish, was 10th overall.

Tyler Figley (61st, 20:29), Brandon Parry (64th, 20:33) and Mike Stevenson (82nd, 21:20) also finished in the top-90.
