Snow-cross event kicks off season on Big Lake

BIG LAKE — A blanket of fresh snow, light winds and temperatures in the low teens combined for a perfect day of snow-cross racing at Big Lake on Saturday. Sponsored statewide by the Alaska Snow X Lions Club, (AKSNOX), Big Lake’s Aurora Lions Club — District 49A, held the first event of the season.

AKSNOX action is scheduled to continue on Saturday with a junior snow-cross event on Lake Enduro. An adult snow-cross event will take place on lake Enduro the following Saturday, Jan. 28.

The Mat-Su Vintage Snow Machine Racers Club continues its season on Jan. 22 at the Islander on Big Lake and is scheduled to continue every other Sunday through March 12 with the final race of the season on tap for March 19. The Aurora Lions Club kids’ races for youth 3-10 continues on Jan. 21 at the track by the Lions recreation center. The Islander track on Big Lake is the alternative site.

AKSNOX has a goal of organizing Alaska’s first snow-cross/freestyle circuit. The group is comprised of volunteered individuals and professional athletes. The group also focuses on allowing athletes of all ages to have opportunities to advance and excel in the sport, no matter what talent level they have. The sport’s growth in a safe manner to all ages, regardless of ability, is paramount.
