Soccer: Knights split with Kenai; Moose fall

PALMER — Gabby Wakaliuk scored a pair of goals to lead Colony to a 5-0 girls soccer win Saturday afternoon at Colony High School.

Mykaela McMullen, Madison Elliott and Lydia Bushey also scored for the Knights.

Colony controlled the play throughout the nonconference match, Colony head coach Jeremy Johnson said.

Both McMullen and Elliott struck from about 25 yards out. McMullen scored on a direct kick and Elliott intercepted a ball prior to her goal.

In a rematch of the 2017 Northern Lights Conference championship game, the Kenai boys edged Colony 3-2. Colony, which is now in the Division I Railbelt Conference following ASAA’s reclassficiation of soccer in the offseason, fell behind 1-0 during the first 10 minutes of the game thanks to a goal by Kenai’s Damien Redder.

Kyle Dearborn and Cade Johnstone answered with first-half goals to give the Knights the 2-1 lead. Dearborn tied the score about 10 minutes following Redder’s goal. Johnstone scored on a direct kick to give Colony the 2-1 advantage.

Kenai struck twice in the second half. James Baisden scored a goal set up by a Zack Tuttle throw-in to tie the game. Riley McKee provided the go-ahead goal.

Moose tie, fall to Kards

Palmer goalie Shaleen Tolbert recorded the shutout for the second straight night, but Kenai’s Kailey Hamilton also didn’t allow a goal during a scoreless tie Friday at Palmer High.

Zack Tuttle scored twice to lead Kenai to a 7-2 win over the shorthanded Palmer boys Friday at Palmer High. Manveer Singh scored both goals for Palmer.

Stars, Grizzlies sweep Moose

Manveer Singh scored for the twice for the second straight day, but Palmer suffered a 9-3 boys loss to Soldotna Saturday at Palmer High. Blake Cooper added a goal for Palmer.

Josh Huber led Soldotna with a hat trick.

Palmer suited only 11 in the game.

Soldotna blanked the Palmer girls 3-0.

Monday, Singh scored Palmer’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Grace Christian. The Grace girls beat Palmer 2-0.

Warriors tie, fall to South

Wasilla and South Anchorage played to a scoreless tie Saturday at Wasilla High. The South boys beat Wasilla 3-0.
