WASILLA — It’s been a long wait for the Wasilla Warriors. But they finally made their season debut Tuesday evening.
Sophomore Ally Hull netted the hat trick, and four different players scored as Wasilla posted a 6-1 win over rival Colony at Wasilla High’s Veterans Memorial Field.
“Three weeks of training camp is a long time,” Wasilla head coach Patrick O’Neill said of his team’s preseason work. “They’ve been chomping at the bit to play. It’s good to get out there and go after somebody else.”
Hull scored during the 15th, 16th and 52nd minutes to help Wasilla open its season with a win.
“She’s just a natural goal-scorer,” O’Neill said of Hull. “She’s always going to be around the ball.”
The sophomore helped break the game open for Wasilla, scoring her teams first two goals during a two-minute span early in the first half. In the 15th minute, Hull brought the ball up the right side of the field. She booted a shot from outside the penalty box, high into the upper corner of the far side of the net. During the next minute, Hull knocked in a rebound left from an Alia Donley shot.
“You never know how you’re going to start a game. Ally shot that one from way out, great shot into the corner, and then got that one on the rebound. I think it gave us another jump in our step after that,” O’Neill said.
Donley scored during the 29th minute to give the Warriors the 3-0 lead.
Hull, Teyonnah Williams and Alexa Starr scored in the second half. Starr, a senior captain, and freshman Phoebe Christiansen finished with two assists each in the victory.
Peyton Johnstone scored the lone goal for Colony, finding the back of the net during the 65th minute.
Colony, which opened with a 3-1 win over Palmer last week, dropped to 1-1 with the loss.
