The weather forecasts for the next several days hint a return to the cold January temperatures people are used to here in the Mat-Su Borough, just in time for the SOUP DOG Soup cook-off to celebrate the finish of the inaugural running of the Su Dog 300.
The SOUP DOG kicks off Monday, Jan. 27 at the Willow Community Center as soup masters from around the Mat-Su bring their best soup forward, while tasters enjoy and will be able to vote for their top 3 soups.
In addition to enjoying delicious soups, the SOUP DOG serves as a source for food for our mushers coming off the trail late that night and into Tuesday morning.
Tasting begins at 3 p.m. and goes into the night, and is $5 per person for all you can eat soups. Su Dog 300 will also be providing drinks and breads to round out the mea, and a winner announced at our Closing Ceremonies on Tuesday evening.
The inaugural SOUP DOG Champion will receive a wooden plaque as well as custom 2025 Soup Dog Champion potholders at the Closing Ceremonies, which will be held Tuesday, Jan. 28.
“This event gathers all the volunteers, mushers, race officials, and fans together for a dinner banquet of stories, laughs, prizes, and awards! Catered by Patriot BBQ, entrance to the banquet is $20 for adults and $15 for kids 12 and under - all you can eat barbeque with all the fixins! This banquet is open to the public and ALL are welcome to this family-friendly event,” said Leddy Leds, Vice Chair and Race Director of the Su Dog 300.
“We want to extend a thank you to all our soup contestants for their submissions, the SOUP DOG acts as a warm, welcoming place for non-dog mushing members of our community to join in on the fun and excitement at the finish line of the Su Dog 300.”
People can still sign up to submit a soup can be found on the website www.sudog300.org, though Leds says signups are almost full, so get those soups in while you can.
