South, Delta claim state hockey titles

WASILLA — South Anchorage won its fourth consecutive ASAA/First National Cup Alaska Class 4A hockey championship with a 4-3 double overtime win over arch rival Service Saturday night at the Menard Memorial Ice Arena in Wasilla.

Freshman forward Brad Schierhorn scored with 4:30 left in the second overtime to give the Wolverines the win. In four years of state tournament competition, the Wolverines have a perfect 12-0 record.

South opened the scoring with a goal by Daniel Carson, but Service quickly struck back with two goals in the next three minutes to grab a 2-1 lead.

Service tied the game on a score by Ryan Kowal, then went ahead on Kory Roy's strike. Roy's goal led to a quick hook for South starting goalie senior Garrett Barr, who gave up two goals on the first four Cougars shots he faced. Barr was replaced by sophomore Josh Denton, who finished out the period without further damage to Service's title hopes.

The Wolverines came roaring back in the second, picking up a shorthanded goal when 2007 Alaska player of the year Robb Haider followed up a breakaway shot by Andrew Treptow, slamming the puck home just before crashing headlong into the net himself.

South then took the lead with 38.7 seconds left in the period on a power play goal by Trevor Allred, whose low slap shot from the point snuck between the legs of Service goalie Cody Gongora.

But Service didn't quit, and with 4.3 seconds left, Patrick Donlan converted a perfect centering feed from Barndon Stanfill to tie the game at 3-3 and force overtime.
