It’s official. When the stadium lights suddenly go dark at Colony High School’s Pride Field, it’s a bad sign for the Knights.

Earlier this month, as Colony hosted East Anchorage, the lights unexpectedly turned off. That night, East erased a 10-0 deficit with 14 unanswered points in the fourth to steal a 14-10 win over the Knights.

Fast forward a couple of weeks.

Late in the second quarter, seconds after Colony took a 20-7 lead over South Anchorage late in the first half, Pride Field suddenly went dark once again.

And once again, the Knights saw their double-digit lead slip away.

South used 21 second-half points to stun the Knights 28-21 Friday night at Colony High School.

South senior quarterback and defensive back Cole Yarrington accounted for all three scores in the second half to help the Wolverines improve to 3-4 overall and 2-4 in conference play, and keep the Knights out of the win column. Colony dropped to 0-7 overall.

Yarrington sparked South in the third with a 90-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the third quarter. Yarrington led the Wolverines on a pair of scoring drives in a span of just more than two minutes in the fourth. The quarterback connected with Isaiah Douyon on a 19-yard scoring pass. With 4:05 left in regulation, Yarrington broke through the middle of the field for a 21-yard score.

South’s fourth spoiled what was a nice first three quarters for the Colony defense.

Leyland Busby recovered a fumble that helped set up Colony’s second touchdown. Trayvon Lott returned an interception 40 yards for a score to give the Knights the 21-7. Colony allowed only 32 yards rushing in the first half, and the defensive front harassed Yarrington throughout the game.

Colony quarterback Tyrus Fischer led the Knights offense with 166 yards passing and a pair of touchdown passes. Hayden Shafer caught a 6-yard touchdown. Jordan Sterling added a 7-yard scoring pass.

The Knights host Juneau-Douglas Oct. 4 in their final game of the regular season.

Colony also lost power to its scoreboard and public address system during the wild and strange night. Once power to the stadium lights was restored, Colony assistant principal Tony Brooke, the announcer during the game, called the down and distances using the loudspeaker on the school resource officer’s Palmer Police Department vehicle that was parked on the stadium’s track. Power to the PA system was restored at halftime.

CHS officials said an electrician in attendance was able to help restore power following the freak outage.

In Division II action, a pair of Valley teams suffered losses in the Interior. North Pole got past Palmer 26-13 and Lathrop beat Wasilla 58-14. Palmer dropped to 1-4 in conference play and Wasilla is 0-5.

Wasilla hosts Eagle River Oct. 4 and Palmer is at Chugiak Oct. 5.
