South out-slugs Warriors at John Tobin Invite

FAIRBANKS — In a battle of two of the top teams in the state, South Anchorage used seven individual champions to top Wasilla and win the team title at the John Tobin Invitational at North Pole High School on Saturday.

With its seven champs, South finished with 204.5 points in the team standings. Wasilla was the runner-up with 183.

South was able to win the team title despite Wasilla’s five wins in the championship finals. Ryker Steiner (132 pounds), Nate McKimson (145), Bryce Serna (160), Mark Dobbs (182) and Quace Wright (220) each won their weight classes.

McKimson upset the top-ranked wrestler in the state to win his title at 145. McKimson, ranked No. 2 heading into the meet, beat Lathrop’s Sam Zimmerman in the finals.

Troy Newland (120), Shannon Carpenter (126) and Alex Fuller (195) also advanced to the finals and placed second.

In duals action Friday, Wasilla beat West Valley 54-22 and Lathrop 37-21.
