ANCHORAGE — During a typical prep soccer season, if the Wasilla Warriors see a team from Anchorage’s Cook Inlet Conference it’s probably not going to be until the state tournament.
That’s why Wasilla head coach Amber Craig was excited to see her Warriors as part of the field of the Dimond Women’s Soccer Invitational. The Warriors would finally be play to see some of the top Anchorage teams during the regular season.
On Thursday, Wasilla drew one of the top programs in the state.
South Anchorage, a team that has never finished lower than third in the state tournament, needed a second-half goal to slip by the Warriors 1-0 at Dimond High School on Thursday.
“It was a well-fought game,” Craig said.
Craig said it was good for her team to recognize the Warriors — who face Dimond today at 7 p.m. and Chugiak Saturday at 11 a.m. — can play with some of the best programs in the state.
First-year goalkeepers Kamarae Kaina and Kelsie Boe continued to split action and both played well, Craig said.
“Both faced a lot of opportunities, both came out with some fantastic saves,” Craig said. “I told them both before the game, expect constant shooting, continuous pressure.”
Kaina and Boe combined for a shutout during a 5-0 win over Grace Christian on Wednesday in Anchorage.
Sharon Koss, Mikaela Hull, Nikki Vanni, Amy Jo Coonrod and Rachel Kennedy scored for the Warriors. Erin Murray led the Warriors with two assists.
