Spectrum: Haven for What?

Our region has become a sought-after destination for young people who want to raise their families in a rural, economically feasible and safe environment. At a time when most of the state is shrinking, the Mat-Su Borough continues to grow. On October 4, Mat-Su Borough residents will be asked to vote on banning the commercialized marijuana industry from the Mat-Su.

Why are we voting on this issue again? In 2014 the statewide voter initiative, called Ballot Measure 2, passed which legalized marijuana for personal use as well as commercialization. A look at the voting results in the Mat-Su revealed that the measure did not earn majority approval. The commercial potential of Ballot Measure 2 came with an option that stated, “The bill would allow a local government to prohibit the operation of marijuana-related entities. A local government could do that by enacting an ordinance or through voter initiative.”

As a community leader who has always worked for a vibrant community which supports strong families and anti-drug efforts, I was glad to see more than a thousand signatures from registered voter to place a commercial marijuana ban on the Mat-Su Borough ballot. This will be Ballot Measure 1 on your ballot this October 4.

Most families that I have talked to are very glad that we have a local option regarding commercialized marijuana. They view the commercialized marijuana industry much more negatively than marijuana for personal use (which is unaffected by the proposed Ballot Measure 1).

Like many people, I am also concerned that the legalization of commercial marijuana in the Mat-Su will negatively affect our children and community. Sadly, we are seeing the devastating effects of the availability of cheap heroin. How can yet another addictive drug at cheaper prices be good for our community?

One woman asked if I thought there was a connection between legalization of marijuana in 2014 and the record rising crime rate and violent deaths in Anchorage. While we can only speculate that increased accessibility and acceptance of drugs also leads to other unsavory behaviors, I share the fear that the Mat-Su will become a destination for deadbeat and homeless dopers.

Make your voice heard and remember to vote on October 4. I encourage you to vote yes on Ballot Measure 1 to ban the commercialized marijuana industry from the Mat-Su Borough.
