EKLUTNA — Anchorage Police say speed was a contributing factor in a fatal crash on the Glenn Highway near the Eklutna Exit April 3 that closed the road for more than five hours and claimed the lives of two people.
The cause of this collision is still under investigation, but the Anchorage Police Department Major Crash Investigation Unit has determined that speed was a significant factor in the severity of this collision, they say.
Their investigation determined Derek Monk was traveling outbound on the Glenn Highway in excess of 90 mph when he lost control of the 2011 Dodge Durango the was driving.
Police say speed involved in the crash highlights a growing trend of speeding on the Glenn Highway and other Anchorage roadways.
In response, drivers are advised that police will increase speed enforcement efforts with a “zero tolerance approach.”
“Drivers should understand that this zero tolerance means exceeding the speed limit by any amount will result in a citation,” Anchorage Police said. “Drivers are encouraged to comply with posted limits, pay attention to work zone reduced limits and always wear your seatbelt.”
Motorists are asked to report dangerous drivers by calling 911.
