WASILLA -- The construction boom in the Valley has made way for Spenard Builders Supply's newest facility.
Two new buildings with more than 16,000 square feet make up SBS' Mat-Su Millwork Center. This 11-acre site houses the millwork shop along with a window/trim warehouse. The new millwork facility can take raw unmilled door blanks, jams, threshholds and other raw materials and in just under a week fill customer orders for doors, windows and trim packages that previously had to be shipped to the Valley from Anchorage taking a week to 10 days. Prices aren't changing due to materials still having to be shipped from Anchorage but there are benefits to having the products produced locally, according to the store's manager.
"The benefit of shipping raw materials rather than finished materials is that we don't need to worry about the finished materials taking damage in shipping," said Curt Lindner, Wasilla branch manager for SBS.
The new facility employs 12 full-time employees and services the Palmer, Wasilla and Big Lake stores. It is also SBS' fourth millwork center in Alaska. The millworks will be able to produce and house custom-milled inside and outside doors, garage doors, windows and trim packages. Allowing for SBS to get these materials to Valley contractors and do-it-yourselfers much quicker.
The millworks is open, operating and SBS is hosting a contractors' open house Wednesday, Aug. 25. The Mat-Su Millwork Center is located at 1700 W. Parks Hwy., next to the SBS Wasilla store.
Anyone with questions about the new facility may contact SBS at 376-5237.
