The Frontiersman would like to feature any news on the progress of former Valley athletes as they compete on the collegiate or professional level.

If your child or former athlete is taking their athletic skills to the next level, please let us know. We are interested in any news, honors, or achievements pertaining to our "Hometown Heroes".

Valley youth basketball

Applications to join the Valley Youth Basketball Association are now available at all Wasilla area middle and elementary schools.

The deadline is Nov. 16. The season starts Jan. 6 and runs through March 16. For more information call 373-3824.

Team Alaska tryouts

Twenty boys basketball players and ten girls basketball players are sought to fill Team Alaska squads in the ASI Nationwide Select Team program, to be selected at a Saturday, November 16 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Anchorage Christian High School.

ASI National Director Mark McLaughlin, Alaska State Director Gary Stewart, Team Alaska Recruiting Director Dave Wilson and the Team Alaska Coaching staff will be directing the intense one-day tryout, with teams to be named November 21.

The selected teams will begin practice in early July, travel to Storm Lake, Iowa July 17-20 for the ASI Midwest National Tournament of Champions, and then travel Tacoma, Washington for the ASI Great Northwest Summer Shootout July 21-26, before returning to Anchorage to host the ASI Great Alaska Summer Shootout July 27-31. Additional Southeast Alaska teams are being constructed by invitation.

Local schools search for coaches

Palmer and Wasilla High Schools are both looking for coaches for the current athletic season.

Palmer is currently seeking a cross-country skiing assistant coach and a basketball cheerleading coach.

Wasilla is looking for assistant basketball and cheerleading coaches.

Women's adult

hockey starting

The Adult Women's Hockey League will be starting soon.

Anyone interested in joining the league can call Joani at 376-4731 for information.

Adult volleyball league starting

The Valley Volleyball League is about to start. This league is for adults interested in a fast game of volleyball. Matches will occur following The Northern Lights Volleyball Club matches on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. at Palmer Junior Middle School.
