Mat-Su Elementary cross-country race will be Oct. 6WASILLA - The 2000 Mat-Su elementary school cross-country running championships will be at Colony High School on Oct. 6, a Friday, starting at 2 p.m.

There will be six races, ranging between one and two miles. Some 500 runners are expected to compete.

Buzby brothers on Minnesota college gridiron teamCROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston has sent out a press release saying that Nick Buzby and Justin Buzby playing football for the Golden Eagles, an NCAA Division II team.

The twin bothers are 2000 graduates of Wasilla High School, where they excelled in several sports.

Nick Buzby is listed as a 6-foot-1-inch tight end, while Justin is a 6-foot-2-inch halfback.

Wasilla 7th & 8th graders to play in state gameWASILLA - The Wasilla seventh and eighth graders beat Colony 39-22 Friday to win their age bracket of the Mat-Su Youth Football Association.

The Wasilla players will take on a team from Anchorage for what amounts to a state championship. The Anchorage playoffs have not concluded, so the opponent is still unknown.

Coach Tony Olivera said the Wasilla team was led by Justin Tharp, who had three touchdowns; Billy Collins, who scored two TDs ; and Dan Camargo, who scored one.

Smith, Bean nominated for national prep awardWASILLA - Wasilla High School counselor Dwight Probasco has announced that the school has nominated two students for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award.

The national awards were created by Wendy's, the fast-food chain, the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the Downtown Athletic Club of New York City. The Downtown Athletic Club sponsors college football's Heisman Trophy. The sponsors pay cash awards to high schools based on the state winners and national finalists for the High School Heisman Trophy.

Smith has competed three years on the Wasilla track team, and this fall is on the cross-country running team. She is also on the National Honor Society. Bean has played basketball for three years, baseball for two years and ran cross-country one year. Like Smith, he is also a member of the National Honor Society, an organization for the country's top high school scholars.

Palmer beats Houston in high school volleyballHOUSTON - The Palmer Moose beat the Houston Hawks in high school volleyball Tuesday.

The final scores were 15-4, 15-7, 15-3.No other details were provided to the Frontiersman.
