PALMER — The Colony Knights have been regulars at the Mt. McKinley Bank Holiday Classic in recent years. But last week, the Knights accomplished something they had not done before.
Colony beat Monroe Catholic on its home floor. The Knights used a 50-37 win over the Rams to win the annual holiday basketball tournament Jan. 5 in Fairbanks.
Colton Spencer scored a game-high 16 points to help the Knights win the 10th annual classic. Patrick McMahon, who was named the boys’ most valuable player of the tournament, chipped in 11.
Colony, which played in a tournament final for the third consecutive weekend, improved to 9-1 with a trio of wins in Fairbanks over a weekend. The Knights opened their season by winning the Doc Larson Roundball Classic in Fairbanks. In late December, Colony finished second in the Cactus Jam in Arizona.
The Colony girls finished second in the holiday classic girls’ tournament. The Knights capped their weekend with a 73-25 victory over host Monroe. Tori Schwantes led the Knights with a game-best 28. Indiya Clarke finished with 15 and Maggie Spencer added 11.
Spencer, Sullivan Menard and Jeremiah Hursrud joined McMahon on the boys’ all-tournament team. Schwantes, Hannah Duguid and Kali Bull were named all-tourney for the girls.
