PALMER —A hometown product helped the Mat-Su Miners snap a three-game losing skid.
Matt Palmer, a former Colony High School standout, scored three runs to help lead the Miners to a 6-3 over the Anchorage Glacier Pilots Wednesday night at Mulchay Stadium in Anchorage. Palmer finished 3 for 4 at the plate, and also drove in a run in the win. Aaron Walters drove in a team-best three runs. Erik Webb added a pair of RBI.
Mat-Su trailed early, but Palmer sparked the Palmer-based team in the third. The CHS graduate led off with a single, and was the first of two to score on an Erik Webb single to tie the score at 1. Newcomer Coby Boulware, an Arkansas freshman, also scored to give the Miners the 2-1 lead. Boulware made his Mat-Su debut Wednesday.
The Miners, who never trailed again, tacked on three runs in the fifth. Palmer once again led off the inning with a single. Later in the fifth, Aaron Walters used a double to clear the bases and drive in Palmer, Justin Kirby and Collin Montez.
Randy Abshier earned the win on the mound for the Miners. The Arizona native allowed only three hits and an earned run. He fanned eight, while walking only two.
The game marked Mat-Su’s fourth straight on the road. The Miners return home to host the Anchorage Bucs Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.
