A dozen teams hit the ice, and the Houston Hawks skated off with the title.

Houston won the Alaska Army National Guard Stars and Stripes Showdown hosted by Palmer High Nov. 11-13 at the MTA Events Center in Palmer.

The Hawks used a 5-1 win over West Valley on the final day of the tourney to clinch the crown.

Afansy Efimov notched the hat trick to lead Houston. Brody Richard and Phillip Kuzman also scored. The Hawks outshot West Valley 36-6.

Houston also beat North Pole 6-1.

Anfim Konev netted the hat trick for the Hawks. Andrey Reutov, Daniel Matveev and Efimove also scored. Konev and Reutov each tallied shorthanded goals.

Houston outshot the Patriots 47-5 and 21-0 in the first period.

Daniel Mateev scored twice to lead Houston to a 3-1 win over Kenai on the first day of the tourney. Efimov also scored.

The Stars and Stripes Showdown is the largest prep hockey tournament in the state with 12 teams. The field featured Colony, Diamond, Eagle River, Homer, Houston, Juneau, Kenai, North Pole, Soldotna, Wasilla, West Valley and host Palmer.

Wasilla also finished 3-0 in the tourney, but finished second to Houston due to the goal differential tiebreaker.

The Warriors capped their tourney with a 5-1 win over Kenai. Branson Starheim led Wasilla with two goals. Austin Petersen, Karson McGrew and Sayer Sanders also scored. Jakob Barcelona made 17 saves in the win.

Wasilla also scored a big 2-1 win over Dimond. Petersen and Roman Holler scored for Wasilla. Barcelona made 34 saves, including 16 in the third period.

Wasilla skated to an 8-3 win over Juneau-Douglas on the first day of the tourney. Petersen, Brenna Hagel, Starheim, McGrew, Brett Woolcott, Dalton Hickey, Easton McRee and Sanders scored for the Warriors. Phillip Brevogel made 11 saves in the Wasilla net.

Host Palmer finished 2-1. Eagle River edged the Moose 2-1 on the final day. Carter Greco scored the lone goal. Joshua Horacek made 26 saves for the Moose.

Palmer beat West Valley 9-1. Xander Logan led Palmer with a pair of goals. Stuart McQuillin, Bryce Armstrong, Kinan Greco, Carter Greco, Jeremy Horecek, Ryan Martin and Gavin Gore also scored

Jeremy Horacek scored a pair of goals to lead Palmer to a 3-0 win over North Pole on the first day. Matias Broughton also scored. Joshua Horecek recorded the 11-save shutout in the Palmer net..

Colony also finished 2-1.

Juneau edged the Knights 5-4. Drake Gallagher led the Knights with a hat trick. Sawyer Kelpe also scored.

Colony beat Kenai 4-1. Jacob Ross scored twice. Luke Hollman and Samuel Sturgis also scored.

Colony beat Soldotna 5-1 on the first day. Kai Dixon, Drake Gallagher, Jacob Ross, Luke Holman and Tyler Keefe scored for the Knights. Malaki Mukabaaya made eight saves.

Houston’s Daniel Matveev, Colony’s Jacob Ross, Palmer’s Stuart McQuillin, and Wasilla’s Evan Koivunen and Brett Woolcott were named to the all-tournament team.
