WASILLA — Sophie Wright was the top Valley runner during the Mustang Smokin’ Stampede at the Beach Lake Trail Aug. 24.

Wright, a Palmer junior, finished ninth in the varsity girls’ race. Wright clocked a time of 19 minutes, 53 seconds. Abbi Boucher led the Wasilla girls’ with a 30th-place finish and time of 21:37.

Palmer sophomore Ryan Owens led Valley runners in the boys’ race, finishing 24th with a time of 17:52. Sophomore Brennan Lackey placed 27th, with a time of 17:59, for the Wasilla boys.

The meet was a late addition to the prep cross-country running schedule, created after the Tsalteshi Invitational in Soldotna was cancelled due to the Swan Lake Fire currently burning on the Kenai Peninsula.
