Defending champion East won the high school girls softball state championship last weekend in Anchorage.
After a 9-7 first-round loss to West Valley, East fought its way through the loser’s bracket, defeating Chugiak 10-2, West Valley 13-1, and South 2-1 to advance to the championship round. The T-birds ultimately held off Dimond in back-to-back elimination games (7-2; 11-2) to win their second consecutive state title.
Wasilla fell to East in pool play, losing 16-0 on East’s 13 hits, four of which were out of the park home runs. Wasilla also lost to Chugiak 12-2, South 14-2, and West Valley 11-8.
“We have a young and new team that is now able to grow from this experience. We played the best teams in the state and were able to test ourselves. Although the outcome of the tournament wasn’t what we hoped for, it is always an honor to play at state,” Wasilla head coach Karli Rauchenstein
Wasilla senior Jordan Malave was selected for the All-State Tournament Team.
