Spring time fun

Valley Life editor

With winter in the rearview mirror and summer just past the next curve, spring is whizzing by every day.

The Valley has plenty to offer weekend enthusiasts during the 20 minutes Alaskans call spring. While summer may unofficially get under way around Memorial Day, the latter part of April and the beginning of May are perfect times to get out and "extend the season" a bit.

Whether it be a day trip to Hatcher Pass, an afternoon spent on a local golf course or a late evening fishing on a local lake, spring is a good time to enjoy being outside before the inevitable rush of RVs and tour buses hit the road.

"I just like getting out and enjoying the longer days," said Thomas Grathnam, who was fishing a Valley lake last weekend. "I'm not a winter person, really. I don't have a snowmachine or anything. I'm more of a summer person."

Grathnam was one of many anglers who took the opportunity to visit local lakes and streams last weekend.

On the golf courses, tee times were filled as sunny skies and warmer temperatures begged duffers to grab their clubs.

Take a day and check out some of the Valley's special places, enjoying the spring weather. You may just find yourself alone at some of the places where hundreds will be once the summer hits.

Take a drive. Hatcher Pass is one of the most accessible beautiful spots in Alaska. Just a half hour drive up the road, Hatcher Pass is a quick trip for everyone -- from Willow to Sutton, and all places between.

Take a hike. Now is the time to enjoy a day hike -- you can hit your favorite trails with a refreshing breeze blowing in your face. Hotter weather is a few weeks away, so take advantage of milder temperatures on the trail.

Take a float. You can rent rafts at several places, and a simple float trip is a good way to relax and enjoy the scenery. Bring your camera and your sense of adventure. Try Willow Creek for a simple day float, or Little Willow Creek for a longer trip.

Take a shot. Settlers Bay, Palmer Golf Course, Fishhook Glenn and Sleepy Hollow are all great golf courses, located in the core of the Valley.

Take a tent. You won't have to fight for space at campgrounds this time of year, making camping even better.

Take a cast. Spring is a great time to take a child fishing at a lake -- the fish are often close to shore, and very hungry after a long winter. Nothing is better than a child catching their first fish.

Take a snooze. Of course, spring means plenty of projects around the house, from putting in a lawn to building a new deck. After all that hard work, make sure you reward yourself with an early evening on the recliner.
