Sprint Tour Series in middle of season

By the looks of the Alaska Sprint Tour newsletter, it sounded as if the recent series at Mitchell Raceway in Fairbanks went off with a little track concern, and a little gossip.

The "Wildest Dirt Show Under the Midnight Sun" included two days of racing in Fairbanks before competitors returned to Capitol Speedway in Willow last Friday.

Next races? July 13 at Twin City Raceway in Kenai. Then back to the Valley for three weekends in Willow, July 27, Aug. 10 and Aug. 31.

That pretty much wraps up the season, so if you want to see these bad boys race, you'd better mark the calendar.

The track concern in Fairbanks had something to do with

a frost heave in the pit area. That's racing in Alaska, folks. There wasn't much to be done about it, so it was incorporated into the race. It became a part of the show.

The advice given to racers concerning this massive heap of dirt, according to the sprint tour newsletter, was "stay along the fence, take a sharp left and go like hell."

Some of the gossip around the track was that one sprint tour racer will beg, borrow and possibly even steal for a turkey sandwich. It might be that same man whose son (or daughter?) is preparing to enter the tour next season. And, finally, somebody (a pit crew member?) got too big for his britches, and was totally exposed on the back end.

Other than that, the Valley's own Bob Erdman and Dave Hughes left the weekend series in pretty good shape. Erdman and Hughes both race in the 360 division. They were standing No. 3 and No. 5 in the points going into last weekend's race. And Robert Hansen of Wasilla was standing in second in the 410s.

Tracy Anacker of Fairbanks seemed comfortable on his home track, winning the main events in the 360 division both weekends, as well as almost every heat. Anacker leads the 410 with 335 points.

The following are race results and point standings for the last two weekends of the Alaska Sprint Tour series, as well as last weekend's results for other tracks around the Valley.
