Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Stanley F. Horton, 71, died Dec. 14, 2003, in Portland, Ore., from small-cell lung cancer. He is a former Alaskan and nephew of former first governor William A. Egan.
Mr. Horton was born to Ralph Horton Sr. and Alice (Egan) Horton on June 3, 1932, in Anchorage at the old Alaska Railroad Hospital. He moved to Palmer in 1933 and went to school and graduated in Palmer. In 1949 he entered the U.S. Navy. In 1952 he was honorably discharged out of San Francisco where he lived and worked as an assistant printer in a print shop until 1962. He moved to Long Beach, Calif., and worked as a crane operator. In 1963 he met Kathleen McGuckie whom he married in November 1964. They had one daughter, Shannon, and moved to Valdez in November 1969, where he worked on the pipeline as a pipe setter and heavy equipment operator. Mr. Horton owned and operated Valdez Auto and Marine Repair and T & H Snow Removal until the family moved to Anchorage in September 1988. He was also a member of the Valdez Eagles No. 1971, The Valdez Pioneer Lodge and the Elks No. 2537, and was exalted ruler.
His family said, "He was a wonderful dad, husband, brother, son and friend and we're going to miss him dearly. He was known for his quick wit, sense of humor and was a feisty person."
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, sister, aunts and uncles, grandson and niece. He is survived by his wife Kathy of Portland, Ore., daughter and son-in-law Shannon Horton and Jesse Harvey of Captain Cook, Hawaii; step-son and daughter-in-law Steve (Rhino) and Cheryl Rindsleich, of Portland, Ore., his sister Donna Fischer of Moor Park, Calif.; brother Richard Horton and wife Laurie of Fairbanks; two granddaughters, Tiar and Ciara Pearcy of Captain Cook, Hawaii; grandson Tim Rindsleich Martin of Portland, Ore., ex son-in-law Rick Pearcy Sr. of Anchorage; ex daughter-in-law Peggy Rindsleich Maloney of Portland, Ore.; ex sister-in-law Delores Horton Voyles of Happy Camp, Calif.; ex brother-in-laws Ken Kurtz of Iowa and James Fischer of Ohio; aunt Neva Egan of Anchorage; four sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, 22 nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins and friends throughout Alaska and the Lower 48. No memorial will be held. Mr. Horton's ashes will be spread at a later date in Palmer and Valdez.
Arrangements were made by Oregon Cremation in Portland, Ore.
