Stars extend football streak with win over Moose

PALMER — Palmer is the last team to beat Soldotna. But Friday, the Moose became the latest team to fall to the mighty Stars.

The Stars extended their state-record streak to 34 straight victories with a 42-7 Northern Lights Conference win over the Moose at Machetanz Field.

Mason Prior iced the game with a pair of second-half touchdowns to help Soldotna improve to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in NLC play. Soldotna, which took its last loss during a 2012 opening-week defeat to Palmer, finished with five offensive touchdowns a special teams score. Kristian Palaniuk gave Soldotna the quick lead, scoring on a 1-yard plunge set up by a Timmy Smithwick interception and return. Minutes later, Trevor Walden recovered a fumble in the end zone after an errant snap on a Palmer punt attempt.

Stars quarterback Brandon Crowder connected with Adrian Gomez-Dickson on a SoHi touchdown pass to push Soldotna’s lead to 21-0. Stars quarterback Dylan Simons, who started the game, scampered free 26 yards for a score to give Soldotna the 28-0 lead.

Crowder and Simons split time behind center Friday.

Prior scored twice in the second half to round out the scoring for SoHi.

Palmer’s Chase Ferris put the Moose on the scoreboard in the second half, hitting the end zone on a 5-yard run.

The Moose dropped to 3-2 overall with the loss and 1-1 in the NLC.
