Four teams were caught in a logjam in the Northern Lights Conference boys’ class. But with a win over Palmer, the Soldotna Stars separated themselves from the pack.
Soldotna clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament with a 48-35 win over the Moose Saturday at Palmer High School. With the win, the Stars finished 4-4 in conference play. Palmer dropped to 2-6, and will be the No. 4 seed in the tourney, which starts March 19 at Colony High School. Wasilla and Kodiak finished tied at 3-5. The Warriors hold the tiebreaker, and will be the No. 3 seed.
Mekhi Rich and Jersey Truesdell led the Stars with 15 points each. Lavar Marshall led Palmer with 11.
Earlier in the day, the SoHi girls beat Palmer 36-33. Lily Anderson led Palmer with 11 points.
Soldotna finished 4-4 with the win, and will be the No. 3 seed in the NLC girls tournament. Palmer, 2-6 in conference play, is the No. 4 seed.
Hawks split with Kards
The Houston boys capped their regular season with a 70-57 win over Kenai Saturday at Houston High School.
Hayden Howard scored a game-high 29 points for Houston. Howard hit five threes in the win. Kyle McLaughlin finished with 20 points and nine rebounds. Cole Taylor added 16 points.
Houston jumped to a 21-12 first-quarter lead, and added 20 fourth-quarter points.
The Kenai girls edged Houston 57-54 in overtime. Emily Bitler led Houston with a double-double, grabbing 17 points and 13 rebounds. Katie Richey finished with 12, Denali Whitted added 11 points and Anna Whitted scored 10.
Huskies split with Seahawks
The Redington girls coasted past Seward 49-16. Abbie Fuller led Redington with 16 points. Marian Aparezuk and Lexi Seymore had 13 each for the Huskies.
The Seward boys beat Redington 66-29. Ruben Bond scored 10 points for Redington.
