Start new year responsibly

Local law enforcement officials say the message may finally be getting through to people, but as we approach the celebration of the beginning of a new year, it bears repeating.

Dont drink and drive.

Traditionally New Years Eve is a night of festive merrymaking that often includes spirits.

Unfortunately, that often meant that the first day of any new year was marred with tragic accidents caused by intoxicated drivers.

Those numbers are down, however. And wed like to keep them down.

If you are hosting a holiday party, be a responsible host. Provide juices, water, soft drinks and other nonalcoholic beverages as alternatives, and serve a variety of food a guest with a full stomach wont get inebriated as quickly because food absorbs alcohol.

Dont continue serving alcohol to a guest who appears to be getting drunk.

Provide tipsy guests a sober ride home or a place to spend the night. Dont be afraid to lose the keys of intoxicated guests.

If you are attending a party where you plan on consuming alcohol, know your limits and keep to them and arrange for a designated driver. Call a taxi. But dont drink and drive.

Alive is the best way is start a new year.
