The Mat-Su Steelers Pop Warner program crowned a pair of state champions following the youth season. The Steelers Mitey Mite team, coached by Josh Henry, went undefeated. The Steelers capped the year 10-0 with a 36-0 victory over East Anchorage in the championship game. Henry led the Mitey Mites to their second consecutive state title. The Mat-Su Steelers Cadet also finished the undefeated and used a 20-12 win over the Eagle River Panthers to win their fifth straight state title. The Cadets are coached by Robbie Nash, who is also the head coach of the Colony High School football program. Nash now holds the Mat-Su Steelers record for state titles by a head coach. Nash was tied at four with Mat-Su Steelers commissioner Clint Spencer. Henry and Tim Cox have two titles each. The Steelers now have 13 state titles in their 22-year history. “I attribute this all to great coaches who can and have brought out the best in each and every youth player that comes through our teams,” Spencer said.
